Glassware by David Patchen
David Patchen is a world famous San Francisco glass artist who uses the old Italian murrine technique. David Patchen’s glass sculptures are distinguished by their simplicity of form, intense colors, complex textures and an unrealistically high level of workmanship.
He has always been drawn to bright colors and detailed drawings. This was the reason why he decided to work only with the simplest forms, using them as an artist – a canvas.
Possessing an inner flair and exacting taste, he decided to direct all his energy to the study of color and transparency, detailing textures and patterns.
Already in childhood, David decided to devote his life to glass, so he was fascinated by the properties of this amazing material. The process of learning the craft was long and hard.
First, David studied at the prestigious Pilchuck glass school, after which he trained for a long time in Italy and Japan.
Based on his own experience, the artist believes that the first year is spent on mastering the elementary technique of working with glass, in order to create a simple figure. The next two years make you feel like the master of this capricious material. After that, an endless process of polishing technical skill begins.
Only having acquired all the necessary skills, you can move on to the second phase – a creative challenge, when the artist begins to understand what exactly he wants to do.
In his work, David combines the Italian “cane” technique (bundles of thin, colored and patterned glass rods), Murano and American style.
