Konrad Witz is a representative of the Swiss school of painting of the Northern Renaissance, whose work was closely associated with the city of Basel. The Art Museum has the best collection of the master’s works in the world.

Absai before David – the interior painting of the altar door “Mirror of the atonement of human sins.” According to the legend, three soldiers, risking their lives, brought water from the Bethlehem spring to King David. Vitz depicts the moment when the ruler, who is near the throne, greets the kneeling Absai and standing to his full height Sivhai and Vanei (written on another wooden panel, also kept in the museum). King David has a portrait resemblance to Emperor Sigismund (1368–1437), who was a member of the Cathedral in Basel.

All the characters are presented on an abstract golden background, dressed in contemporary costumes for the artist. Soft fluffy fur, light wool and delicate velvet, the cold glow of metal armor, the surface of which reflects nearby objects, are painted with great skill. The coloring of the work is rich and juicy, the colors are like beautiful enamel paintings, they shine and shimmer.
