Self portrait with family by OTTO VAN VEEN
The Flemish artist Otto van Veen bowed to the art of the Italian Renaissance and in his work, especially in religious compositions, he tried to follow its precepts. The artist’s portraits are distinguished by their realistic manner. This Louvre work represents his large family. He himself sits in front of an easel with unfinished work, and around him are relatives – both men and women with starched collars sparkling white that stand out against dark clothes. All ladies, regardless of age, are depicted with white caps on their heads.
