Charles I, King of England, hunting

The Flemish portraitist and painter of the religious genre Anthony van Dyck lived in London from the early 1630s, being the court painter of King Charles I. In the ceremonial portrait, the king is depicted standing, leaning on a cane, on the edge of a cliff. Below you can see the sea going to the horizon with a ship running along the waves. Everything on the canvas is subordinated to the stately figure of the king. It stands out clearly against the background of the endless bright sky. A black wide-brimmed hat gives expressiveness to the image of the hero and, in contrast, draws the viewer’s eye to his face, which looks very impressive. The portrait was purchased by Louis XIV and entered the Louvre in 1775.
