Alfred Philippe – legendary French jeweler
Alfred Philippe created jewelry that not only the elite but also the middle class could afford. He became the best designer in the United States of that time. In the 1950s, the first lady of the United States, Mamie Eisenhower, ordered jewelry from Alfred Philip.
Within a few years, Philip turned the development of Trifari 180 degrees. Trifari first launched a line of jewelry that was very similar to Cartier’s platinum jewelry collection. The stones shone, the workmanship was very high – the difference was only in price. Later, the design becomes more and more daring, for example, there are paired brooches in the form of straw men (made of gold), a couple of clowns and dancers, and the Jelly Belly series. To prevent the products from being separated after purchase, they wrote in the advertisement of the brooches: “How is it in a dance without a partner?”
Alfred considered it unimportant whether he had diamonds or rhinestones in his hand, pure gold or silver with 24 carat gold plating, or rhodium-plated metal.
His flower and fruit brooches from the Depression and World War II helped many women feel like princesses even with a penny in their pocket.
It is quite a rare case in a jeweler when a recognized master leaves an expensive company and goes to make beauty for the poor…
But his work became so popular that celebrities, movie stars and presidents’ wives, were drawn to such beauty for ordinary women.
So the first lady of the United States even wore Trifari sets from Alfred Philip to inaugural balls.
