Birth of Saint Nicholas of Bari 1430s
Pietro di Giovanni d’Amborgio is an Italian painter of the 15th century, one of the most active and fruitful masters of the Sienese school. In his works, his own creative searches were combined with the achievements of Florentine art. A student of the famous Sienese artist Sasetta (Stefano di Giovanni), d’Amborgio largely adopted and adopted the style of his work.
The image representing the birth of Nicholas of Bari is the predella, the lower part of the altar, now lost. The plot is borrowed from the “Golden Legend” by Yakov Voraginsky, a collection of medieval legends, which tells about a miracle when the baby Nikolai, immediately after birth, confidently stood up while bathing in the bath. The people around were amazed and surprised by what happened.
In this work, Pietro di Giovanni d’Amborgio tries to apply new ideas about spatial perspective, to connect them with “Gothic” techniques: despite the openness of the horizon, in the picture the artist does not get a real, but a “mystical”, even a fabulous space in which the plot.
