It is very rare to see cameo glass vases in bronze frames from the French master Abel Combe at auctions. I was unable to find virtually any information about this artist, who made complex and beautiful products. What is known is that he worked in Paris in the period around 1880-1890, creating vases in the neoclassical style and signing his works “Abel Combe/Paris”.
Blanks for such vases were created from laminated glass, usually in contrasting colors. Then a pattern was applied to them with a special reserve compound. After this, the workpiece was placed in acid to remove the top layer of glass. A pattern remained on the surface, protected by a reserve compound. The design was then further refined by engraving. Almost all of Abel Combe’s vases have gilded bronze frames in the form of flower garlands.
