Biography of Zaha Hadid Zaha

Hadid was born on October 1, 1950 in Baghdad, the capital of Iraq. Despite her Eastern origin, she did not suffer from strictness and restrictions. The family was wealthy, traveled a lot and adhered to liberal views. Zaha’s mother was an artist herself, so her daughter’s creativity was always encouraged.

Equally beneficial for development was the environment at the American University of Beirut, where Hadid received her mathematical education. With a diploma in mathematics, Hadid went to London, making a firm decision to become an architect. There she entered the London School of Architecture and soon got a job in the office of her teacher Rem Koolhaas. After completing her studies, Zaha opened her own bureau, but success is still a long time coming.

For ten years, the bureau developed only interior items, while Zaha led an active social life and created on paper. Finally, in 1993, her first big project was completed. The famous furniture company Vitra in Germany entrusted the young architect to build a fire station on their premises. The building, unique for its time, was made in the style of deconstructivism, which is characterized by a violation of the usual laws in the construction of architectural forms, unexpectedness and brokenness of lines. Now it is a museum displaying samples of Vitra furniture.

Zaha’s best projects

Hadid After the implementation of the first serious project, Zaha woke up famous, but not in demand. The mass public was still not ready for such forms. A breakthrough in her career as an architect is associated with the construction in 1997 of a building to which she had no relation.

We are talking about the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao, designed by Frank Gehry. The museum became one of the most spectacular buildings in the world and strengthened the position of deconstructivism. In 2004, the Pritzker Prize was awarded, and in 2005, the main prize at the Design Miami exhibition. In the future, Zaha was constantly in demand, often she was entrusted with the most important and landmark projects.

The construction of the Fano Science Center and Museum in Germany is completed this is another important milestone in the work of Hadid. Her signature features are clearly manifested here: white color and the predominance of horizontal lines. Despite its huge size, the museum looks subtle and graceful, showcasing a feminine take on architecture.

One of Hadid’s finest buildings is the Guangzhou Opera House.

Outside, it plays on the theme of the water surrounding the building and resembles a sparkling ice floe. Inside, the theater looks like a magical mother-of-pearl shell with excellent acoustics.

In London, the building of Zaha Hadid appeared three decades after her office opened in this city. The Water Sports Center, which looks like a white wave, was built for the 2012 Olympics. It hosted swimming, water polo and high jump competitions. Hadid designed not only the appearance of the Center, but also a system of pools with varying depth and area.

In the same 2012, the Heydar Aliyev Center in Baku was completed, which is now considered the pride of Azerbaijan. The structure of fluid form looks like it was built from soft and pliable materials. Zaha received an award from the British Design Museum for this project.

In Moscow, there is also a building by the architectural bureau of Zaha Hadid.

This is the Dominion Tower office center, which is an original layering of horizontal planes.

Zaha Hadid died in 2016, but her office continues to grow and now has more than 400 employees. Some buildings continue to be erected according to her designs. For example, Al Wakra Stadium is being built in Qatar, where the 2022 FIFA World Cup will be held.
