Vaclav Sporski – Belarusian artist of Polish origin

Vaclav Sporski was born in Belarus in 1960, graduated from the Minsk State Art College named after A.K. Glebov. In 1983, he became known to the general public as an artist, initiating exhibitions both in Belarus and abroad. Since then, he has participated in many exhibitions, which he himself has lost count of (including in his native Belarus, Poland, the Netherlands and even Japan). His works are in collections in his homeland and abroad. He is a member of the Society of Polish Artists at the Union of Poles in Belarus.
Sporski is a mature, comprehensively developed artist, confident in the chosen path.

In his paintings, we will not find a copied world. The world in Sporski’s paintings is transformed, even when it touches on classical themes, such as still lifes, figures of saints, angels, women, children, cityscapes (like postcards from trips to Venice, London …). He is interested in many subjects, and a good subject for a painting can really be “anything”, and this “anything” can become a source of inspiration, stimulating the creative process. Life, inspiring in itself, gives rise to countless thoughts, transformed into images.

Along with the main motifs, behind the foreground, in the background of subsequent layers, Sporski places elements, as if “from another fairy tale”, from another world, from another country, which only upon careful observation reveal their symbolic origin. The concepts of foreground and background are fluid, and everything creates an exquisite whole, into which one can immerse oneself, encountering subsequent details. Sporski’s paintings are analytical, saturated with details, but this fragmentation creates a complete and perfect image. Saturated with color of different tones, they fascinate with their mystery and ambiguity. Let’s give the floor to Marina Zagidulina, a Belarusian art critic:

The creative style of Vaclav Sporsky is clearly individual and organically intertwined with the artistic system of contemporary Belarusian art. The artist gives new aesthetic meaning to spontaneous impressions from observations and experiences, and it is these impressions that create the depth and content of his paintings. The artistic basis of his works is the polysemy of symbols, concealing the subjective feelings and thoughts of the author and at the same time appealing to the emotional and intellectual experiences of the viewer. Revealing his own perception of the world, the artist creates metaphorical content at the junction of real forms and fantasy. (…) Adhering to a humanistic worldview, this artist glorifies the timeless beauty and versatility of the world in his works.

According to another art critic, Natalia Pavlenko: “His painting is poetry, a mystical act of combining reality and imagination in the most unpredictable combinations. His style of painting so effortlessly captures and so nobly combines colors, rhythms and forms that a uniquely beautiful and majestic, familiar and at the same time mysterious world is born, where everything moves, everything vibrates and sways, and everything is elusive. (…) Reality, symbols, metaphors and allegories, broken into fragments, pass through the filter of the artist’s creative imagination and turn into a bright, memorable image.

The works of Vaclav Sporsky contain so many chains of associations, so much play of color and light that a captivating melody is born, which affects the viewer more than words and sounds.” The artist himself admits that “creativity is an amazing spiritual practice”, and the main thing in the creative process (and beyond) is the path – as the goal of life, the path to oneself. ” Since each person is a Universe with infinitely unconscious levels of understanding, like the world around us, creativity cannot be an absolute or objective concept. When a person comes into contact with the true creative process, he begins to understand that the path is not unidirectional, that threads diverge from its center in different directions.” And the greatness of his art is in this open subjectivity, allowing for multiple interpretations.
