Józef Marian Chełmoński (1849 – 1914) – Polish artist of the realistic trend.

J. Chełmoński studied painting in Warsaw in the Drawing Class and privately with the artist Wojciech Gerson in 1867-1872. In 1872-1875 he continued his education at the Munich Academy of Arts.

In 1875, Chełmoński went to Paris, where he successfully exhibited his works. He collaborated as an illustrator for the Parisian newspaper Le Monde. During this period, Chełmoński traveled to Italy, in 1872 and in 1874-1875 he traveled around Ukraine.

In 1887 the artist returned to Poland and lived in Warsaw. In 1889 he bought an estate in Kuklowice, where he lived until his death in 1914.
