Still life with a dog and dead game near a rose bush
François Deportes started out as a portrait painter, but was appointed by Louis XIV as painter of the royal hunt. So he began to perform works corresponding to the subject: genre works with hunting scenes and still lifes with game. The artist was allowed to go hunting with Louis, which gave him the opportunity to personally observe the royal amusements and sketch their brightest moments. “Still life with slaughtered game near a rose bush” can also be regarded as an everyday painting depicting a hunting dog, examining the trophies with interest. Deport was an excellent animal painter, he managed to convey the character and habits of animals, it is no coincidence that the artist painted “portraits” of the king’s favorite dogs.
