Pavel Andreevich Fedotov – a magnificent genre painter of the middle of the 19th century

Turning to completely new topics, the genius gave Russian fine art a social significance. The witty satirical work has other names: “Morning of the official who received the first cross”, as well as “The consequences of the feast”. The work was not easy for the master. For her sake, the artist undertook to master the technique of oil painting, abandoning the usual watercolors and pencils. However, this did not prevent the author from surprisingly accurately conveying the psychological image of a typical low-ranking civil servant.

Being in need, the painter sold the painting to patron Fyodor Pryanishnikov, in whose collection the work was kept until 1867. Then the work ended up in the Moscow Rumyantsev Museum. And with the advent of Soviet power, it was transferred to the Tretyakov Gallery. The painting “The Fresh Cavalier” by Pavel Fedotov is an innovative masterpiece of genre painting. This is a historical evidence of Russian life, characteristic of both the capital society and the life of provincial cities.
