Evening Golden Ples is a painting by Isaac Ilyich Levitan, in which he captured a view of the Volga in 1889. A calm expanse of water, a distant shore shrouded in twilight, a small town immersed in greenery – all this creates an atmosphere of serenity and peace. Two buildings stand out on the canvas: a snow-white temple with a bell tower and a two-story house with a red roof. It was in this building that Levitan repeatedly stayed with his artist friends.
In the foreground, juicy green plants predominate. The sun sinking below the horizon illuminates the river with a gentle light. The author with amazing accuracy conveyed not only the feeling of complete tranquility, but also the beauty of nature.

Isaac Ilyich Levitan is a Russian artist who worked at the end of the 19th century.
Beginning in 1887, the painter spent four consecutive years on the Volga for a long time. He especially fell in love with the small town of Ples, standing on the very bank of the river. Levitan went every evening to the mountain, later named after him, to watch the sunset. And during the day he wrote, relying on his memories.
This is how the painting “Evening. Golden Ples” and other masterpieces dedicated to the charming views of the Volga. The author finished the work already in the capital and presented it to the public at the eighteenth exhibition of the Wanderers. Critics highly appreciated the picture. There is an etude of the same name, written by Levitan as a draft material.
The painter executed it in oil on plywood and presented it to one of his students, the artist Vladimir Sokolov. In 1940, this work was acquired by the Tretyakov Gallery, where it is kept to this day.
