Painting Astronomer by JAN VERMEER OF DELFT
It is possible that the equally famous scientist and inventor of the microscope Antony van Leeuwenhoek posed for the famous Dutch painter Vermeer to paint this picture. Astronomer’s hand touches the globe of the celestial sphere. There are a dozen books on the bookcase, a table with three drawn circles hangs, the purpose of which is currently unknown. Without books, maps, an astrolabe and a compass, it is impossible to imagine a scientist of that distant time. The artist wrote down the details of the picture so accurately that the illustration he reproduced in the open book of the astronomer allowed the researchers to establish its name.
