Madonna of Chancellor Nicolas Rolen

The painting Madonna of Chancellor Nicolas Rolen, created by one of the founders of the Northern Renaissance, the Flemish artist Jan van Eyck, owes its name to the customer, the Burgundian chancellor Nicolas Rolen. The Chancellor is the active hero of the composition: he sits opposite the Virgin Mary, and the Child blesses him. The architectural environment is beautifully painted, through the light arched openings of which a marvelous view of a small garden opens, symbolizing the purity of the Virgin. Space is running away. The landscape gives an additional characteristic to the images: residential buildings are visible behind Rolen, and churches are visible behind the Virgin Mary.
