Satsuma was the name of a principality in the south of Kyushu (now Kagoshima Prefecture), famous for the production of porcelain. Porcelain production began here in the 17th century. According to legend, in 1610, the Korean craftsman Ri San Pei discovered cocoa deposits in the south of Kyushu and founded the first porcelain workshop. Soon, hundreds of pottery workshops appeared in the neighborhood, named after the owner Yabu Meizan, Yasuda, Kinkozan.
