Louis Buisseret (1888- 1956)

Louis Buisseret is a Belgian painter, draftsman and engraver. He showed interest in painting quite early. In 1904, he entered the Academy of Fine Arts in Bergen, where he studied engraving. A little later, he began to attend painting classes. In 1905, the first exhibition of Louis Buisseret’s works was held in his hometown – Binche.

In 1908, Louis entered the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Brussels. As a student, Louis Buisseret won second prize in the painting competition (1910) and first prize in the engraving competition (1911).

After completing his studies at the Academy in 1913, he went to Italy with his father, where he studied the works of old masters.
Starting in 1920, he took an active part in exhibitions and salons. In 1922 Louis got married, and his wife became the artist’s main model. Paintings and drawings with her image are filled with an atmosphere of serenity and calm. In 1927, a scandal broke out at one of the exhibitions regarding the obscenity of the artist’s painting. Anto Carte stood up for him. This incident became one of the reasons for the creation of the Nervia art group, which was founded in 1928 by Louis Buisseret, Anto Carte and Léon Eeckman.
