Bartolome Esteban Murillo painted paintings of religious content, as well as genre works, the heroes of which were poor commoners. The artist liked to depict street boys in their daily activities. One of them is depicted in the painting “The Little Beggar”. The life of this child, like many of his peers who find themselves in similar circumstances, is not rich in joyful events and does not indulge him. All her “generous gifts” easily fit into the composition of the work: miserable rags, a wicker straw bag with several apples, some shrimp lying right on the floor, an earthen jug and a dark corner in which a beggar boy sits surrounded by his household. The painting entered the Louvre in 1858.
