Jacob van Looy (1855 – 1930) was a Dutch artist and writer, a representative of Amsterdam impressionism.
The future artist lost his parents very early and was in a Haarlem orphanage. At first, he studied to be a painter, but from 1877 he began attending drawing classes in Amsterdam.

In 1884, the artist received a Rome scholarship, which allowed him to travel to Italy, Spain and Morocco in the following years, drawing sketches and making travel notes. Returning to his homeland, he continued his studies and painting.
He lived in Amsterdam until 1894, then he married Tita van Gelder and moved to Soest.
The Agony in the Garden.
In 1901, he spent another year in Spain and Morocco. The orphanage where he grew up was converted into the Frans Hals Museum and in 1913 Jacob returned to his homeland. He bought a house on the corner of the Haarlem park, where he was often seen walking. After the death of the Dutch artist, this house was converted into the Jacob van Looy Museum (the house can now be recognized by a memorial plaque on the facade). Also, a collection of his travel drawings is kept in the Taylor Museum.
