Three Jesuit Martyrs in Japan. 17th century.
He was born in the town of Santarcangelo di Romagna near Rimini. With the support of his father, he went to Bologna and studied there in 1618-1621, apparently with Lodovico Carracci or his students. Then he studied in Rome with Guercino. From 1627 to 1642 he worked in Rimini. After that, he was in Forli, where he studied with Melozzo da Forli.
Mater Dolorosa (Grieving Mother). 1660. Schleissheim Palace, Munich.
In 1628, he unsuccessfully attempted to elope with the aristocratic widow Theodora Stivvi, whose relatives did not consent to the marriage. As a result, Cagnacci was forced to leave the city for a while. After returning to Rimini in 1631, his works show the influence of the Roman followers of Caravaggio.
Emperor Leopold I (1640 1705) in coronation costume. 1657 1658. Canvas, oil. 190×120 cm. Kunsthistorisches Museum, Vienna.
Eccentric, untrustworthy, of dubious morals, a lover of spending time in the company of models dressed in clothes of the opposite sex – these are some of the reviews of his contemporaries. In 1650 he went to Venice, and in 1658 to Vienna, where he was patronized by Emperor Leopold I.
Jacob Peeling the Rods. 1655. Owned by the Royal Collection, London, England.
His early paintings were painted on religious subjects. However, after renewing his friendship with Nicolo Renieri in Venice, he often painted sensual nudes of women, including images of Lucretia, Cleopatra and Mary Magdalene. Cagnacci’s works were not understood by his contemporaries, but modern critics have praised them. His painting is considered warm, saturated with light, enriched by the play of shadows and colors.
