Wladyslaw Podkowinski (1866-1895) – Polish impressionist

Wladyslaw Podkowinski (1866-1895) – Polish impressionist and symbolist artist.

Wladyslaw Podkowinski first studied painting at the Warsaw Academy of Fine Arts, under the artists Wojciech Gerson and Aleksander Kamiński. Then – at the St. Petersburg Imperial Academy of Arts. After graduating from the latter, in 1889-1890, he worked in Paris. After returning to his homeland in 1890, he settled in Warsaw.

In Paris, the young artist fell under the influence of the impressionists, especially Claude Monet. Returning to Poland, Podkowinski became one of the most active promoters of impressionism, but later he turned to symbolism. The latter change is apparently associated with Wladyslaw Podkowinski’s incurable illness.

The artist painted his pictures in oil, and also created watercolors. He preferred figurative painting, landscapes, and also painted portraits. He collaborated as an illustrator with a number of Polish periodicals.
