Two Sisters by THEODORE CHASSERIAU

Théodore Chasserio, painter and graphic artist, trained from the age of 12 by Jean Auguste Dominique Ingres, painted this double portrait of his beloved sisters Adele and Alina when he was 24 years old. The sisters look intently at the viewer, their resemblance is striking. Adele and Alina are separated by twelve years: one is 33 and the other is 21. The withering rose on the elder’s belt hints at her age, but the sisters seem very close to each other in character and way of thinking. The age difference is not so noticeable, and completely identical dresses only enhance the similarity.
