Joseph- Theodore Deck (1823-1891) was a famous French potter of the 19th century. Born in Guebwiller (Haut-Rhin), Joseph-Théodore began learning the trade at the age of 20 and moved to Paris at the age of 24. In 1856 he founded his own faience workshop, Deck Ceramique Française. In 1887 he became artistic director of the Sevres porcelain factory.

When in the 1870s Europe was swept by the fashion for the art of the East, which is now called Japonism, he enthusiastically embraced this trend and embodied it in artistic ceramics. In the 1880s, Theodor Dec worked in the Chinese pottery tradition, collaborating with Raphael Collin, Marie-Caroline-Eleanor Escalier-Legereau and other artists of the day.
