Portrait of Volkonskaya by Konstantin Makovsky is a charming image of a secular lady by a well-known master

“Portrait of V. A. Volkonskaya” is a painting painted by Konstantin Yegorovich Makovsky in 1884. The canvas depicts a young society lady sitting on a high-backed chair. Her light appearance stands out brightly against a dark red-brown background. A white festive dress with luxurious embroidery elegantly fits a refined figure. Weightless flowing fabrics of a lush bottom fall to the floor.

On the left side of the corsage, on the blue St. Andrew’s ribbon, there is a cipher-sign of the maid of honor with the monogram of Maria Feodorovna, the Russian Empress and wife of Alexander III. A short necklace with a massive pendant wraps around the neck and accentuates the shoulders and neckline. The precious stones of the brooch and the tiara framing the head shimmer in his tone. The wrists are adorned with wide pearl bracelets. The half-open fan in the hands of the heroine emphasizes her belonging to a secular society.

Konstantin Makovsky – famous Russian artist of the late XIX century

Critics often reproached the artist for excessive idealization, lack of serious content in his works and counting on an external effect in order to attract clients. However, not only the forms of a secular ceremonial portrait are inherent in the work of the master. For his paintings, he also willingly chose subjects from the life of the urban poor.

Possessing natural observation, he carefully studied nature, recreated whole, colorful images, which ensured his success among wealthy customers. The portrait of V. A. Volkonskaya was commissioned to Makovsky by the Countess herself at the age of 36. The artist painted Vera Alexandrovna in his characteristic manner, with a slight touch of romanticism.

The author carefully worked out the composition, detailed the image, balanced the shape and color. The viewer hardly notices the discreet background with rich drapery and palm branches in the background. His focus is entirely on the heroine. Transparent breathable texture, soft transitions of tones give the image an amazing brightness.

The painting “Portrait of V. A. Volkonskaya” by Konstantin Makovsky reflected the beautiful image of a secular lady and became another evidence of the magnificent skill of a talented painter.
