Isaac Ilyich Levitan is an outstanding Russian landscape painter of the second half of the 19th century.

In 1889, he went to Europe to get to know the trends of foreign art. At this time, impressionism was rapidly gaining momentum in France. The works written during that period amaze with the richness and velvety of colors. The painting “Spring in Italy” was no exception.

There are two versions of the work. Levitan captured the landscape from the same angle at different times of the year and day. The first canvas depicts a later period: the grass is bright green, the trees are in full bloom. The second option is an image of early spring: almonds are just picking up buds, and the air seems to vibrate with freshness. A road has been added in the foreground, a small house is hidden behind the trees. The bright colors and sharp shadows suggest that the sun is at its zenith.

Currently, the first version of the painting is on display at the State Tretyakov Gallery, and the second is in a private collection.

The painting “Spring in Italy” by Isaac Levitan was inspired by the works of the Impressionists. It fully allows you to feel the magical atmosphere that accompanies the moment of awakening nature from its winter sleep.
