Nikolay Gavris is a woodcarving master who lives and works in the Crimea using a unique technique “on the butt-end”. The master creates three-dimensional colored wooden carvings without the help of paints. The work “on the ends” is like a mosaic. When working on any product, several types of wood are used and only along its end parts. In the course of the story, you will see for yourself how it happens!

Somehow, while working at a retail outlet, the future woodcarving master saw beautiful handicrafts brought by craftsmen from Transcarpathia. These crafts shook him to the core! He wanted to try it himself. I bought the first chisels, material, and everything worked out. Since then, Nikolai only improved his skills and came to the discovery of a new technique in woodcarving.

The uniqueness of his technique lies in the fact that he alone is engaged in carving in the cross section of wood when creating multifaceted, large compositions. Before him, other craftsmen who worked in this technique made their products from the same breed and in small sizes. This is confirmed by the fact that on the international woodcarving site, there are no more masters who would also masterfully master this technique in full. Until now, no one has challenged his primacy.

He began to make such a bookcase in 2011 and the work continues to this day. The project is already 9 years old! And this is understandable, because the creation of one small butterfly takes up to 6 weeks. It is clear that not everyone can afford such a wardrobe. Just one piece of ebony the size of a pack of cigarettes costs about $ 200. The tree is shipped by airmail from Hawaii, where it grows.
