The first national museum of modern art and architecture was built in Rome by Zaha Hadid. The ultra-modern building contrasts with the appearance of the city, but when viewed from above, it is clear that the museum is built into the layout of Rome and the course of its river. The wings of the museum end with panoramic windows.

The main elements of the building are curved concrete walls, black staircases floating in the air and an open ceiling that lets in daylight. The walls of the museum change along their curves, in some places flowing into the floors. Critics compared the walls of MAXXI to bobsleigh tracks. Hadid herself said that she wanted the walls of the museum to “unwind like a ribbon in the air.” Some have called the museum’s plan “the most mesmerizing and alluring since Frank Lloyd Wright revealed his seemingly impossible blueprints for New York’s Guggenheim Museum more than 50 years ago.”

Dive into the museum begins with a huge vestibule, stretching the entire height of the building. On the first floor, you can choose your path: between galleries, stairs or elevators. Two of these roads lead to the heart of the exhibition space, while the third exits the main volume of the museum and leads the visitor along a glazed path, allowing you to look at the galleries from the side.

“For me, it’s like standing in Rome’s Piazza del Popolo,” says Hadid. “When looking north, the square splits into three streets offering an unexpected and exciting choice of direction. However, all three roads lead to the same point.”

MAXXI was built in the Flaminio area, where a renovation program of public spaces has been underway in recent years. For example, the Renzo Piano Auditorium was erected here. MAXXI is built into a galaxy of objects of the renovated city. The museum fills up as the 21st century passes.
