Jorge Castillo – Spanish painter
Jorge Castillo is a Spanish painter, graphic artist and sculptor. He was born on June 16, 1933 in Pontevedra, a city and municipality in the Spanish province of Galicia. A year after his birth, the Castillo family immigrated to Argentina for political reasons, and Jorge spent his childhood and youth in Buenos Aires. He began drawing very early, like any child, but it soon became clear from his works that the boy had talent.
In 1955, Castillo returned to Spain and initially settled in Madrid. During this period, he worked mostly on surrealist drawings made with ink and gouache. In 1959, he presented them at his first exhibition at the ‘Galería Altamira’ gallery in Madrid.
In the early 60s, Castillo moved to Barcelona , after which he spent two years in Paris. After moving to Geneva in 1966, he had the opportunity to work with graphics and printing. He tried to spend the summers in Boissano , a small Italian commune on the Ligurian coast. Today, Jorge Castillo is considered one of the most famous Spanish sculptors and painters and an integral part of Spanish surrealism and informalism, and his works enjoy great success and respect in Europe and the Americas. Jorge received his first professional award in 1959. In 1964 and 1968 he participated in the Biennials of São Paulo and Venice.
His works were awarded such prizes as the ‘International Prize for Drawing’ and the ‘International Prize for Painting’ at the prestigious Darmstadt Exhibition in 1964 and 1975.
