Johann Georg Meyer, nicknamed Bremensky – German artist

Johann Georg Meyer specialized in genre and religious painting and painted peasant and family scenes, as well as paintings on biblical subjects. Johann Georg Meyer paid great attention to scenes from the lives of children and painting portraits of young women.

The full name of the artist: Johann Georg Meyer von Bremen, most often signed his works – Meyer von Bremen, is also known as Johann Georg Meyer. The artist was born in Bremen, on October 28, 1813. At the age of 21, Meyer von Bremen went to Düsseldorf, where he entered and studied at the Düsseldorf Academy of Arts, which at that time was headed by Friedrich Wilhelm Schedow (son of the sculptor Johann Gottfried Schedow). Therefore, his entire life was associated with the Düsseldorf school of painting.

At the beginning of his creative path, Johann Georg Meyer painted pictures on biblical subjects, and soon went to Hesse, to the Bavarian and Swiss mountain regions, where he studied the life of people for his future genre paintings.

In 1841, Johann Georg Meyer opened his studio, and in addition to biblical scenes, having studied the life and life of the people, especially the peasants living in the lands of Hesse, he also began to create genre paintings on everyday themes.
In 1952, Johann Georg Meyer had already gained wide fame and moved to Berlin, where he mainly painted genre paintings on everyday themes. At the same time, many of Johann Georg Meyer’s paintings were filled with sympathy for the “simple chronicles of the poor.” The artist paid great attention to scenes from the lives of children and painting with young women.

In 1863, Johann Georg Meyer became a professor. The artist died at the age of 73, on December 4, 1886, in Berlin.
Currently, some of Johann Georg Meyer’s paintings are in the Metropolitan Museum in New York, in other museums and private collections, and have also been sold at many auctions. The highest price was paid for the work “Sleeping Beauty” (1868), sold in 2008 at Christie’s auction for $89,967 USD. This painting is also presented in this publication (see above).
