Gérald Genta (1931–2011) is a Swiss designer and artist who has become a legend, who is called the “Picasso of watchmaking”. During his life, Gerald Genta (more often his name is translated into English – Gerald Genta) drew more than 100,000 watch designs.
Genta is known for his eponymous line of watches, as well as for his design work for famous watch brands: Omega SA, Universal Genève, Patek Philippe and Audemars Piguet, which are called the most complex and expensive watches in the world. His work is first and foremost the work of an artist who has spent over 50 years at the drawing board and created models that remain the world’s best-selling models today.
After opening his own brand Gérald Genta in 1969, Genta created a series of unique watches, including the $810,200 Octo Granda Sonnerie Tourbillion. This white gold case is water-resistant to 30 meters. The model is equipped with a Swiss automatic movement Gérald Genta 31002 with four repeating gongs made of a special alloy, which provide the deep sound of the Westminster Big Ben.
In 1994, Genta designed the Grande Sonnerie Retro, the most complex wristwatch in the world, worth around $2 million. On private commissions, Genta personally designed movements, dials and watch cases, without resorting to outside help, outsourcing or mechanization. Not surprisingly, some watches could take up to 5 years to make.
Gérald Genta has created extraordinary and unique pieces, such as this Animal Clock series, which has been compared to Fabergé’s work. This was followed by a rose gold elephant watch, then a yellow gold lion watch, white gold polar bears and finally a green gold crocodile watch. All compositions are the same size, on a beautiful rock crystal stand with a clock and a perpetual calendar, encrusted with precious stones.
