Eliseu Visconti – one of the most important Brazilian artists

Eliseu Visconti (1866-1944) is one of the most important Brazilian artists during the period of the arrival of the Impressionist style in the country. He was a talented artist and designer, made many exhibitions and presentations of his works, and also achieved great recognition, taking a position as a teacher at the National School of Fine Arts in Rio de Janeiro. Eliseu Visconti was born in the city of Giffoni Valle Piana near Salerno, Italy. He was naturalized Brazilian shortly after the Proclamation of the Republic.

Eliseu Visconti was an outstanding student of the Imperial BelasArtes Academy, where he received many awards and medals. After graduation, he traveled to Paris. In addition to studying decorative arts at the Ecole Guérin with Eugène Grasset, he was interested in the works of the Italian Renaissance masters, especially Sandro Botticelli, which is reflected in his paintings mainly linear figures, such as Giuventú (1898) and Dance of the Oréades (1899), which received a prize at the International Exhibition in Paris in 1900 before returning to Brazil.

With the modernization of art in Brazil, his work opens the main international trends in the late nineteenth century and early twentieth century. Seeks to strengthen the relationship between art and industry, and in Rio de Janeiro in 1901 held a personal exhibition that includes in its exhibits ceramics, marquetry, stained glass, fabric printing and wallpaper. From 1903 alternating periods in France and Brazil. In 1904, he made a bookplate for the National Library of Rio de Janeiro, and won a competition for stamps and ticket cards. In 1905, he made a portrait of the sculptor Nicolina Vaz de Assis – one of his most representative works in the genre. That same year, he was invited by the mayor of Rio de Janeiro to decorate the Municipal Theater of Rio de Janeiro. He showed great influence from impressionism, and began to use lighter and brighter colors.

In 1913, he returned to France to decorate the foyer of the Municipal Theater, consisting of three panels.
In 1920, he returned definitively to Brazil. He painted many landscapes, such as Healing Sun (1920), which is installed in a hotel in Saint-Hubert, on the outskirts of Paris. Visconti represents the manifestation of the Brazilian branch of impressionist technique. Eliseu Visconti made many self-portraits. He made a great contribution to Brazilian painting.
