Godfried Schalcken lived and worked during the golden age of Dutch classical art. He painted mainly portraits and genre paintings. Schalcken studied painting with Samuel van Hoogstraten in Dordrecht. Then, around 1675, he moved to Leiden, where he studied in the studio of Rembrandt’s student Gerard Dou. In the early genre works of G. Schalcken, the influence of the work of G. Dou is felt. In 1691, he returned to Dordrecht, in 1692-1697 he lived and worked in England, then went to The Hague, where he remained until his death in November 1706.
